The classic Lumpiang Shanghai is a staple at every Filipino feast. A Filipino gathering isn’t complete without the beloved shanghai. Brought by Chinese Immigrants to the Philippines, Shanghai is greatly inspired with Chinese cuisine but with a Filipino twist. Here are the reasons why Filipinos love shanghai.
First, it’s the crispy texture and amazing flavours. Shanghai is mainly composed of minced, onion, carrots, pork, seasonings, garlic and scallions, wrapped in a thin crispy wrapper. The fusion of Chinese cuisine partnered by the addition of local Filipino flavors, Shanghai is the ultimate appetizer to serve at every feast. It’s savory salty goodness paired exceptionally well with a side of sweet and sour sauce that gets everyone drooling. Even Though Shanghai isn’t really that healthy, along with it’s also famous cousins like siopao and siomai. Lumpiang Shanghai is a culinary gift given to us by our Chinese neighbors. Second, Shanghai is very versatile. It can be eaten as an appetizer type finger food, it can be paired with rice, you can change the filling with different ingredients. A vlogger actually went viral online by putting unique ingredients like ube, popcorn, suman, truffles and deep frying them in Lumpia wrappers. It just shows that you wrap anything in Lumpia wrappers and you get a delicious treat.Third, Shanghai is nostalgic. Imagine a pool party with your family, water dripping from your body, shanghai in your hand, eating at the corner of the pool with videoke blasting in the background. Shanghai has been a staple at every Filipino gathering for generations, bringing a delightful treat at every single table it's been served at.
In conclusion, Shanghai deserves its place at every “handaan”. With its soft savory filling on the inside and crispy wrapper on the outside, give that a little sweet and sour sauce, and your taste buds will be fulfilled.
