The Beauty in Bitterness: An Iced Americano Story Time
When you think of iced coffee you think of sweetness, mocha, and sugar most likely. Iced coffee has that reputation of having that sugary taste bound to leave a sweet satisfaction in our mouths. But what if you remove that aspect? You would be left with espresso and water mixed to make what we know as a bitter coffee, the iced americano. Not many people would be have this as their first option, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't one of them. In reality, I have a soft spot for this type of coffee. A bitter taste for an equally bitter person (no not really), this is a post and how this underrated order needs to be more known.
First Thoughts, First Sip
Silly me first ordered this coffee in the in a quick stop for iced coffee. I was intrigued by this coffee's name. As someone who doesn't order coffee that much in the past, I wanted to taste something new other than the sweet caramel ones. I ordered it, unknowing what it would taste like. I mean, I read there was only two ingredients plus some sugar, I suppose. I drank it, ooh boy, it's *really* not sweet, bitter even. I was confused, and looking back on it, I shouldn't be; this is what an americano is. I doubted myself, "why did I order this", I said. Begrudgingly, I took another sip, and it hit me. Wait, this is unique, this is good.
Upon taking the next sip, a realization hit me. This is not what I usually thought about iced coffee; it's bitter but I'm kinda liking it. I took another sip, then another, and it planted this coffee's name into my mind. That bitter taste lingers in my mouth. That cold liquid sensation just so happened to enhance it even more. I realized, this lacks the sugar that caramel macchiatos usually have. Its bitterness exudes something different from the usually sweet coffees being sold. From caramel to matchas being bought, I never see anyone try this and I understand. Some may not like this type of flavor but that just means that everyone has different taste palette. And for me, I would appreciate anything coffee.
"Any Coffee is Good Coffee" – My Final Thoughts
This coffee right here solidified my personal motto for coffee: "Any coffee is good coffee". I learned to appreciate this sugarless caffeine drink. Though some may not have this as their cup of tea (or coffee per se), this still holds a dear place in my cravings when I would get the chance to buy iced coffee again. I'm proud to say that this coffee is my guilty pressure on a gloomy day. A gloomy day where I don't need to be hyper with sugar but still crave that distinct taste of caffeine.
